Emma Thompson-Chaplin is a British contemporary artist based in Japan whose work explores architecture, reflection and memory through the lens of Japanese aesthetic philosophy. Drawing inspiration from principles such as Kanso (simplicity), Ma (space), Wabi-Sabi (impermanence) and Fukinsei (asymmetry), her paintings transform urban landscapes into contemplative studies of light, surface and place.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including exhibitions with TomuraLee in Tokyo, the Asia Art Fair (2023), the Philippine Art Fair, and a solo exhibition, Kanso: Reflections of Minimal Form, at Gallery A8T in 2024. Most recently, her work was presented at the Automobile Council Tokyo (2026).
In December 2026, she will present Kagami no Nihon (Mirror of Japan), a new solo exhibition with TomuraLee in Ginza, exploring reflection, perception and the relationship between contemporary Japanese architecture and cultural identity.
